Black Heart and his pirates were not exactly homemakers, but they’d established a small village of huts on the island in the eye of the storm. Once ashore, the pirates quickly began to prepare a feast on the beach, building several large fires.

As they gathered on shore, the Spawn hovered expectantly nearby, her eyes on Clarice.

“You’re leaving now, aren’t you?” Gunnar said.

The god-like being crossed her wispy arms over her chest. Waiting

“I think so,” Clarice said.

The Primal gestured to one of the skiffs they’d all just disembarked.

“You’re going back out there?” Gunnar asked. He glanced toward the horizon, where the water churned as it gathered around the maelstrom at the heart of this storm.

The girl nodded.

“Do you… want me to—you know—row you out or something?”

Clarice smiled. “You’ve escorted me far enough, Gunnar Ashwood. The Spawn can take it from here, I think.”

“Well, er, it was good to—”

The girl stuck out her fist, and they tapped knuckles.

Gunnar smiled. “Don’t suppose I’ll see you again, huh?”

She shrugged. “There’s more Star Runners than you might think. Who knows. Keep movin’ and don’t get yourself stuck in dumb shit.”

Gunnar smirked and nodded.

The girl said no more. She hopped into the skiff. Gunnar, Alex, and Em helped shove it off the beach, and Clarice rowed away from the island.

Gunnar watched her as she neared the horizon, wondering what exactly was out there. Was there even an actual whirlpool? Or was it an illusion like the storm mass?

He kept thinking about what Clarice had said during their second trip to the Void.

“You all right?” Em asked, standing at his side.

“We’ve got a lot to catch up on.”

An hour later, Gunnar and Em stood on the other side of a portal, inside the Void. The pirates were gathering supplies for a big feast to celebrate the escape from Hollow Run. Gunnar had wanted to talk to Alex too, but she’d been quiet and keeping her distance since the orc raid. And Em would be able to talk with her IRL.

They’d emerged in the tangle of dark foliage where Gunnar had established his first line.

“So, this is where dark magic comes from?” Em asked, taking in the strange realm.

Gunnar nodded. “And where Leilani’s monsters are coming from too. But most importantly, it’s the one place where they can’t see us.”

“They?”

“Virtuality.”

Em glanced around, looking nervous. “You sure about that?”

“I’m not sure about anything, but if what Clarice said is true, then it makes sense. And we’re in deep shit.”

Gunnar told Em about the gods, his experiences in Grid Eight, Luka and Leilani, and what Clarice had told him about the System the gods had created, hijacking worlds to feed their own Glory.

Em’s eyes were wide and vacant.

“You wanna offer a little input here?” Gunnar asked. “Cuz I’m freaking the hell out.”

“What do you expect me to say? You’re telling me that you’re actually dead, and gods from another universe are trying to take over our world.”

“Technically, I didn’t say anything about another universe. I have no idea where they’re from.
